ABOUT US

The Programme was founded in 2017 and was borne out of a much smaller initiative that involved the donation of clothes and other supplies to some orphanages in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. One particular trip taken to Plovdiv for this initiative coincided with International Women’s Day, which focused our thinking on the very difficult plight of gifted yet financially disadvantaged, young women in particular, living in these homes. After seeing the considerable challenges faced by the children, we decided to do something small to address the situation.

SCOPE

Aware of the quality of the medical school at Plovdiv University, we decided to set up a scholarship programme for disadvantaged young adults, without the financial wherewithal, attend the university program.  The Programme provides financial support of up to EUR 2,000 per annum. The selection process is needs-based and incorporates both  academic and personal criteria, including community awareness. Preference is made to young women who can be left behind in a patriarchal culture.

SUPPORT & THANKS

The scholarship programme is structured as a non-profit association (l'association sans but lucrative, or asbl) based in Luxembourg. The Programme is largely funded by the kind donations of individuals, without which this Programme would not be possible. In particular, we would like to thank contributing staff from the European Investment Bank, European Investment Fund and European Stability Mechanism for their support at launch.
